How is a match made?
Introduction.
We encourage everyone to take it step-by-step. After an introduction, when you meet someone you might like to live with, Home Share of Central Vermont (HSCVT) suggests you get to know each other a little better over a cup of tea or maybe a dinner out.
Getting Acquainted.
Next, it’s get acquainted time, when the home seeker moves in for up to two weeks. We recommend that home seekers pack very lightly, as this is not yet a permanent move. This time is simply an opportunity to see if you like living with each other. During these two weeks, if either of you changes your mind, no problem. The home seeker moves out, and HSCVT continues to help both of you find the right match.
Preliminary Agreement.
If you both decide you’d like to share a home, we’ll help you prepare a preliminary agreement outlining the specifics of your individual match. Each person’s needs will be addressed. Schedules, shared kitchen space, use of the laundry facilities and parking are just some examples of the details it’s good to talk about to avoid running into trouble later. Because sometimes there are concerns that are hard to raise, our staff mediator will help you discuss the difficult topics.
Final Agreement.
In two to four weeks, it’s time for your final agreement. HSCVT will again come to your home to work with both of you. Most often, people are enjoying their new relationships. However, new questions may have arisen. It’s important to talk through these details, so your final agreement can help guide your long-term, successful relationship.
Throughout the course of your home share, HSCVT will be there to help you. We know conflicts crop up in every relationship. As part of our commitment to help your home share match work, our staff can help you work through any difficult spots.
Sometimes, it’s best for the home share match to end. We’ll support you in that, too. Whether you need assistance from our home sharing supervisor or mediator, we’ll be there to help — because, from beginning to end, a home share arrangement is all about what’s best for each of you.
